The season for us at SpeedSource has been another excellent year so far. I am continually impressed with everyone in our operation here at SpeedSource. We are relatively new to Rolex GT competition compared to some of our rivals and we have quickly risen to the challenge at every race.
Starting out with a win at the Rolex 24 was awesome for Mazda and our new sponsor Castrol Syntec. After that win we did struggle a bit coming to grips with the new Pirelli tires. By the time we got to Laguna Seca in May, I think all the work everyone had done was beginning to show. Finishing second at Lime Rock Park was such a tremendous victory for us considering our dismal performance a year earlier. The six-hour event at Watkins Glen was just a great team effort. After our pre-race warm up incident which heavily damaged the front end, we rebuilt the car in a phenomenal 90 minutes to make the start. We were doing great in the race until an alternator wire broke and cost us time in the pits, ruining a potential win. In contrast to our difficulties, our team car did exceptionally well and won that race. At Mid-Ohio the storm conditions during the race were very difficult to say the least. Still, finishing just outside the top five was good for points. Our win at the Daytona 250 in July was a bit bittersweet because of the turn 3 incident which rolled over and severely damaged our team car in the final laps. The next race at Barber we won, which to me was a little unexpected. The year before we had struggled quite a bit during the race. When we watched the tape from the 2007 race we were determined to not let that happen again. It was ugly!
Montreal was a CRAZY race for everyone. I still have people telling me what a great call that was. I have to explain to them that was our only choice we had no chance of making it on fuel. We had to stop when we did and it worked out in the end. Our New Jersey race was something we definitely didn’t need now. After steadily gaining on the points leader, an oil leak slowed our progress in this championship battle.
That leaves Miller Motorsports Park left. We will continue as we have all season to do the best we can. We have a super reliable car and in a seven-hour race anything can happen. We have won previous championships at the last event with just a handful of laps to go. Like I always say “that is why they run the race.” See you at Miller.
